Gift Six – Teresa
February 27, 2008
First, I would like to extend my sincerest apology to The Collective. My gift is very late and although I have excuses in my head as to why, there is no excuse in my neglect. However, I am hoping that my gift will more than make up for it. My offering this week is “Elvis Costello”.
When I was growing up, I really wanted nothing to do with Elvis C. I wasn’t a huge fan of Elvis Presley and felt that Mr. Costello’s name was too close to Mr. Presley’s. Guilt by association. I am still lukewarm on the “King of Rock n’ Roll”, but I discovered my deep passion for Elvis Costello in high school.
I had many other ideas in my head, but I found out last week that, even though the concert is technically sold out, tickets to the Police concert with Elvis as the opener were available to me if I could talk my husband into paying close to half our mortgage payment for said tickets. I had a great Elvis compilation that I donated to a friend’s collection. I never seemed to keep any of my cds because I always felt music was so important to share.
So, today, I share my love of Elvis Costello. And I say to him, “Mr. Costello, I’m giving you a longer look everyday I write the book…”

What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace And Love
It is always a treat when Teresa chooses music to share. I have never really known or understood Elvis Costello, even though I knew that I should considering he is pretty foundational in music. I had a friend in High School that had such an appreciation for Elvis C. He was a cool kid who had a great taste in music and it always left me a little confused why Elvis C. would be one of his favorites. Now that I listened to the the songs that Little T. Lo chose, I see why he had such a affinity toward Elvis C. Maybe it took some maturing on my part. No, it definitely took some maturing.
Thanks for sharing such a classic. Teresa is always educating me in the world of music.
Costello eluded me also. Like the Beatles, Bowie, and the Stones, Costello represented the musical equivalent of eating my vegetables. I knew it was good for my musical health, but I lacked the discipline. But today, Lil’T has cooked up an audio casserole, both pleasing to my grown-up palate, and satisfying to the soul.
The Beatles have now become the dietary equivalent of taking cod-liver oil. It can be good for you, but no one really needs it anymore.
Yeah, I said it.
